PORCELAINia

THE EIGHT CHINESE IMMORTALS

LI T'IEH-KUAI
[Li Tieguai]

Li T'ieh-kuai is the Sage of Magician and the Patron of the Sick. His emblem is the iron crutch and gourd of life preserving medicine. He is often depicted standing on a crab or beside a deer. Li T'ieh-kuai is said to have had magic powers and left his body to explore the celestial sphere. Once his servant thought he was dead because he was absent much longer than usual, and buried his body. When the soul of Li T'ieh-kuai returned, he hadn't a body to enter so he entered into the body of a lame beggar.
