Aspasia was born in Miletus in Ionia and came to Athens in her early adulthood to engage in the intellectual, artistic life of Greece. During the middle of the 4th century, B.C., Aspasia lived with Pericles, the military and political leader of Athens but remained a courtesan and opened a Salon -- a home for young courtesans -- where leaders of classical Athens would gather to discuss questions of politics and science. Visited often by Socrates, she was the teacher of Plato and Anaxagoras.
