This piece is named for Claudius Ptolemy (85 AD - 165 AD), the Greek astronomer. Ptolemy is best known for his great work, the "Almagest" the most influential astronomy text for more than 1500 years. His most original contribution was his careful detailing of the motions of the sun, moon and planets.
