Miriam the Prophetess is considered the mother of the proto-science of alchemy. Also called "Maria the Jewess," she is believed to have lived in the first century A.D. and wrote under the name, "Miriam the Prophetess" which tends to make her identity confused with that of Moses' sister in biblical history. Her scientific importance should not be underestimated, for it was she who laid down the theoretical and practical bases of western alchemy in her treatise, "Maria Practica." Maria the Jewess also invented some of the most sophisticated laboratory tools of her time.
